IRISH SURNAMES AND COUNTIES OF ORIGIN

The following list of names and the counties they represent is your guide to finding the birthplaces of your Irish ancestors. The information is based on naturalization records, cemetery stones, newspaper reports and especially bank records of Rhode Island residents. The list, by no means complete, represents individuals born in the wake of the Great Hunger (1845-1852). Many who came were not naturalized, nor could they afford a bank account or a stone in a cemetery.

Is there a surname/county link missing? Do you have documentation of the county of origin? If so, please let me know and I will add it to the list.

Old Stone Bank Records 1844-1897

Records are searchable by name, date, birthplace, occupation etc. Originals are owned by the Rhode Island Historical Society. GV refers to Griffiths Valuation (1847-61), TA to Tithe Applotment (1823-1837). Ages can be inaccurate as immigrants did not necessarily know birthdates. For original images, visit NEHGS.
